Foray Fit: A Blessing for Transcendence

April is National Poetry Month!

To celebrate we are bringing you weekly highlights from some of our favorite ambling bards and the paths that inspired them.

In our final post for this series, we widen our lens of study from individual poets to the Navajo Nation, one of North America’s richest indigenous cultures, spreading across Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the Navajo have had a presence in the Southwest since 1400 A.D.

The Poem

The Navajo people place great emphasis on recognizing the higher presence that surrounds us as we move through life. In this version of a traditional blessing, walking is the means through which transcendence, from the physical to the spiritual world, is achieved.

"As I Walk in Beauty"

Today I will walk out, today everything evil will leave me,
I will be as I was before, I will have a cool breeze over my body.
I will have a light body, I will be happy forever,
nothing will hinder me.
I walk with beauty before me. I walk with beauty behind me.
I walk with beauty below me. I walk with beauty above me.
I walk with beauty around me. My words will be beautiful.

In beauty all day long may I walk.
Through the returning seasons, may I walk.
On the trail marked with pollen may I walk.
With dew about my feet, may I walk.

With beauty before me may I walk.
With beauty behind me may I walk.
With beauty below me may I walk.
With beauty above me may I walk.
With beauty all around me may I walk.

In old age wandering on a trail of beauty,
lively, may I walk.
In old age wandering on a trail of beauty,
living again, may I walk.
My words will be beautiful.

The Path

The Navajo Nation is home to some of the most scenic expanses of the Southwest, including the iconic Monument Valley. Passing through the landscape, you can not help but marvel at the grandeur and seeming impossibility of the natural world.
