Foray Fit: Blushing on a Boardwalk

May is for the birds!

Spring is finally here, and everyone is anxious to be on the move!

Including our fine feathered friends.

With bird migrations in full swing throughout May, birding is an excellent low-impact, socially distanced outdoor activity.

To inspire you to stay moving with our avian brethren, we will bring you weekly highlights of some of the nation's best (and easily accessible) birding spots, along with a species you're likely to spot.

Lettuce Lake Park (Tampa, Florida)

Spanning 240 acres and featuring a 3,500-foot boardwalk with an observation tower and an interpretive center, Lettuce Lake Park is an ideal spot to head out birding. The Tampa Bay Audubon Society also offers guided birding walks for beginners on the second Saturday of every month. Visitors have regularly glimpsed more than 187 species of water and upland birds, including the exotically blush Roseate Spoonbill.

The Bird

Roseate Spoonbill (platalea ajaja)

A roseate spoonbill feeds in calm waters

With its stunning plumage, the Roseate Spoonbill is occasionally mistaken for a variety of flamingo. You'll find them in shallow waters swinging their heads from side to side as they feel for prey with their distinctive bill.
